Traditional Egyptian Carob Drink (Sharbat Kharoub)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup crushed dried carob

  • 4 cups water

  • 3–4 tbsp sugar (to taste)

Method:

  1. Lightly toast the carob pieces in a dry pan for deeper flavour (optional).

  2. Add water and sugar in a pot.

  3. Heat gently while stirring — avoid boiling hard.

  4. Simmer for 10–15 minutes.

  5. Strain and chill.

  6. Serve cold.

Sweet, cocoa-like flavour with gentle caramel notes.

Soak and blend for carob drink or add to herbal mixes.

Carob-based drinks are naturally caffeine-free. The sweetness usually comes from sugar, so moderate portions are still wise.

Children are often intrigued by the long, hard pods and how they transform into a sweet drink.
