Egyptian Story

Hibiscus (karkadeh) is one of the most iconic Egyptian drinks — served hot in winter and cold in summer.
It is deeply linked to Egyptian hospitality, weddings, Ramadan nights, and family gatherings.
Its deep red colour and refreshing sour-sweet taste make it a national favourite.

Usage

  • Brew to make hot hibiscus tea

  • Soak to make cold karkadeh drink

  • Add sugar or honey to taste

  • Mix with lemonade for a tangy refresher

  • Can be used as a natural colour and flavour in desserts

Classic Egyptian Cold Karkadeh

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus

  • 4 cups cold water

  • 3–4 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)

Method:

  1. Rinse hibiscus lightly to remove dust.

  2. Soak in cold water for 2–4 hours until deep red.

  3. Strain and sweeten to taste.

  4. Chill and serve over ice.

Tangy, fruity and floral with a deep red colour.

Use for hot or cold karkadeh drinks and herbal blends.

Hibiscus infusions are naturally caffeine-free. When prepared with modest sugar they can be a refreshing alternative to many soft drinks.

Many children know karkadeh simply as ‘the red wedding drink’ served in tall glasses.
